When one of our employees came to us recently asking for a donation for her family’s charity, we were happy to oblige. Lianne Collett works in our Sydney office but hails from Zambia, where her family have set up a charity to help local disadvantaged children. The focus of the charity is to build a school, with her family donating five acres of their own farmland for the project. This came after a study found more than 200 children in the area do not attend school – and those who do walk up to 28km per day to get to the nearest school and back, only to receive four hours of poor-quality education. Many of these children also lack basic necessities such as food, clothing and blankets. This is where the suggestion that cievents could step in. As the school is some time away from being built, it was agreed that a gift that could be enjoyed now would provide a much-needed Christmas treat for these children. $1500 was donated, which was used to purchase 200 blankets and three bales of second-hand clothes, biscuits and nutritional drinks. This directly benefitted 200 children in the Chisamba farming community, many of whom previously shared a single blanket with their siblings (not a pleasant way to spend a chilly winter’s night, particularly when many of these children sleep on the floor) and only had two or three changes of clothes.
